Blended Learning

What is blended learning?

http://pfl.grad.ncsu.edu/files/2013/11/Behave-like-a-teacher.jpg

How was your classroom activity? Boring? Monotonous? The teacher speaks all the time? Yes, those are traditional classroom. However, nowadays you can have a very interesting classroom through technology. You can have a more interactive and interesting class through blended learning classroom.

Blended means combine or mix many things into one thing. Blended learning means combining classroom and virtual instruction optimizes learning through online-computer technology. Teachers are equipped with significant resources to maximize planning and instructional time and differentiate instruction to accommodate varying proficiency levels. Students assume greater ownership and responsibility for their own language development and progress at the pace and level appropriate to their needs.

The blended classroom is designed to meet the individual needs of student by allowing teachers to personalize instruction.  This strategy can be used for any subject and any grade level.  Blended learning combines face-to-face and online instruction. It allows students to work with teachers in school and have online resources at home. Therefore, the students can understand more the material at home. They do not depend on the teachers’ explanation because they can get the material from many sources from the internet.

Pros of blended learning:
·         Provides for individualized support for the students
·         students can access material at anytime, anywhere, to review the material
·         provides richer, more interactive learning experiences
·         provides more time for collaboration with the students and teachers
·         parents have access to what students are doing - better communication and support
·         more and more colleges and even workplaces are using this model.

Cons of blended learning:
·         Teachers will need time to create and/or select content.
·         Teachers will need training on using this method of instruction to make it effective
·         students will need to be shown how to access, use the technology and what is expected of them
·         Students need to be able to do work outside of school hours

Example lesson plans
The example of blended learning classroom is when teacher is using videos from YouTube, Discovery Education, Khan Academy as a replacement for lectures - students watch them at home and then discuss them in class. The teacher also answers questions in class and dives more deeply into the content.

4 Models of Blended Learning
1. Rotation model — a course or subject in which students rotate on a fixed schedule or at the teacher’s discretion between learning modalities, at least one of which is online learning. Other modalities might include activities such as small-group or full-class instruction, group projects, individual tutoring, and pencil-and-paper assignments.
a. Station Rotation
b. Lab Rotation
c. Flipped Classroom

2. Flex model — a course or subject in which online learning is the backbone of student learning, even if it directs students to offline activities at times. Students move on an individually customized, fluid schedule among learning modalities. The teacher of record is on-site, and students learn mostly on the brick-and-mortar campus, except for any homework assignments.

3. A La Carte model — a course that a student takes entirely online to accompany other experiences that the student is having at a brick-and-mortar school or learning center. The teacher of record for the A La Carte course is the online teacher. Students may take the A La Carte course either on the brick-and-mortar campus or o-site.

4. Enriched Virtual model — a course or subject in which students have required face-to-face learning sessions with their teacher of record and then are free to complete their remaining coursework remote from the face-to-face teacher. Online learning is the backbone of student learning when the students are located remotely.

In my opinion, Blended Learning is very interesting, because through blended learning we can have more sophisticated classes. Besides, through blended learning, we can have more sources for teaching and learning process. As a result, classes will be more interesting. students also will be excited to join classes,

ICT Assignment 4

E-learning
E-learning is very important nowadays because through e-learning we can learn many thing in the world through internet. Many people try to make learning easier and more attractive. One of the ways to do it is by using e-learning. E-learning is very attractive because it has many interesting learning media.

http://www.freeimageslive.com/galleries/workplace/education/pics/e_learning.jpg

E-learning (also called electronic learning) is any type of learning that takes place through or with a computer. E-learning is primarily facilitated through the Internet but can also be accomplished with CD-ROMs and DVDs, streaming audio or video and other media. The purpose of e-learning is to allow people to learn for personal accomplishment or to earn a professional degree, without physically attending a traditional university or academic setting. E-learning can be applied for all levels of schooling from grade school to graduate degrees, and is versatile enough to accommodate all learning styles.
E-learning (in most cases) requires a computer with Internet access.
Another benefit to e-learning is that it is self-directed, meaning that the e-learner sets the pace of her learning.

Positive Impact of Internet

Internet according to Onno W. Purbo (1998) at least, there are three things a positive impact in the educational use of the Internet are:
a) Learners can easily take courses anywhere in the world without borders or boundaries of institutions.
b) Learners can easily sit on the experts in the field of interest.
c) Lectures / study can easily be taken in various parts of the world without relying on the university / school where the students learn. In addition, the current library also present a more dynamic Internet and can be used in the entire universe.

Criteria of E-learning

Rosenberg (2008) categorizes three basic criteria contained in e-learning, namely:
a) E-learning is a network, which allows him to improve quickly, save or bring back, distributing, and sharing of learning and information. This requirement is essential in e-learning, so that Rosenberg called it an absolute requirement.
b) E-learning is delivered to users through a computer using standard Internet technology. CD ROM, Web TV, Web Cell Phones, Pagers, and aids other personal digital although learning can prepare messages but can not be classified as e-learning.
c) E-learning is focused on the views of the most extensive learning, learning solutions beat traditional paradigm in training.

Example of Online tools and applications
  • Livemocha
  • Edmodo
  • Plinky
  • Bojam
  • Beanbag

Assignment 3

Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL)

CALL has come to encompass issues of materials design, technologies, pedagogical theories and modes of instruction. Materials for CALL can include those which are purpose-made for language learning and those which adapt existing computer-based materials, video and other materials (Beatty, 2003). By using CALL, teachers can make attractive learning process. Besides, they can make various teaching media for their students.

https://www.aast.edu/pheed2/contentadmin/retreiveOnePIC.php?disp_unit=392&img=multimediaforbusiness.jpg

Based on the communicative approach, communicative CALL focuses more on using forms rather than on the forms themselves. The communicative CALL programs provide skill practice in a non-drill format, through language games, reading and text reconstruction. This approach still uses the computer as a tutor, although it gives students choices, control and interaction. Finally, communicative CALL also uses the computer as a tool, in programs that do not provide language material, but enable the learner to understand and use the language, such as word processors, desk–top publishing, spelling and grammar checks programs, as used for instance in process writing.

Phases of Call

Behavioristic CALL

The first phase of CALL, conceived in the 1950s and implemented in the 1960s and '70s, was based on the then-dominant behaviorist theories of learning. Programs of this phase entailed repetitive language drills and can be referred to as "drill and practice" (or, more pejoratively, as "drill and kill"). Drill and practice are both important in teaching process, because students can remember the lesson better after the drilling and practicing process.

Communicative CALL

The second phase of CALL was based on the communicative approach to teaching which became prominent in the 1970s and 80s. Proponents of this approach felt that the drill and practice programs of the previous decade did not allow enough authentic communication to be of much value.

Steps toward integrative CALL: multimedia

Integrative approaches to CALL are based on two important technological developments of the last decade - multimedia computers and the Internet. Multimedia, such as picture, audio and video, in really important in the teaching and learning process in the class, because the students will be enjoyed the teaching and learning process if the media is interesting.

Steps toward integrative CALL: the Internet

Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), which has existed in primitive form since the 1960s but has only became wide-spread in the last five years, is probably the single computer application to date with the greatest impact on language teaching. By using internet, teachers can get any teaching media that can support the teaching and learning process in the class easily. Therefore, the teaching and learning process can be very interesting.

Using the net also gives students control over their learning, enabling them to go at their own pace and choose their paths according to their individual needs, which may also be motivating. It helps in promoting learner independence and the development of learning strategies, provided that learners receive appropriate guidance.
Secondly, the World Wide Web (WWW) give students instant access to a wide range of authentic material, from newspaper and magazine articles to radio broadcasts and informal chat-rooms, and also to material prepared specially for learners, such as grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary exercises and tests. Apart from retrieving information from the Internet, learners can also create their own materials, such as projects, and share them with partner classes or with the general public. This possibility also adds a great deal of interest, as learners communicate with a real audience.

ICT in Education

http://www.research.usp.ac.fj/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/ICT.jpg

ICT is a valuable tool to enhance teaching and learning. For teachers ICT is a professional resource, a mode of classroom delivery, and a source of valid and valuable text types. For students, ICT provides opportunities to communicate more effectively and to develop literacy skills including skills in critical literacy. It is a valuable tool for researching, composing and responding, and viewing and representing in English. In short, ICT is an important tool in teaching and learning process. In addition, by using ICT to teach, our teaching could be more attractive and effective.

Advantages of ICT tools for education
  1.  Through ICT, images can easily be used in teaching and improving the retentive memory of students.
  2. Through ICT, teachers can easily explain complex instructions and ensure students' comprehension.
  3. Through ICT, teachers are able to create interactive classes and make the lessons more enjoyable, which could improve student attendance and concentration.

Therefore, by using ICT the teaching and learning will not be boring because teachers can add many attractive thing in their learning media, such as picture, video, and song.

Disadvantages of ICT tools for education
  1. Setting up the devices can be very troublesome.
  2. Too expensive to afford
  3. Hard for teachers to use with a lack of experience using ICT tools

Although setting up the devices can be very troublesome, teachers can learn how to set up the devices. Therefore, they will be able to set up the devices easily.
